Using sensors connected to mobile phones, Nottingham based collective Active Ingredient visualise and interpret environmental data. A Conversation Between Trees is a new locative artwork that connects trees in different climates and environments. Using sensor technologies to visualise and interpret the sensor data as an interactive installation. A playful conversation between artists, scientists, audience and location exploring woodland ecologies in the UK and Brazil, developed through a series of residency labs.

More Information

During the 2-week residency at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Active Ingredient collected sensory data and visualised the findings to reveal the invisible changes at play in the surrounding woodland areas. They also conducted a series of experiments including a live link up between trees in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Visitors were invited to act as human sensors and to record non-scientific data (subjective data) on how they perceive the atmosphere around the tree in the park. Active Ingredient used this data to compare people’s perceptions and experience in relation to the scientific data they were collecting during the period of the residency.

A Conversation Between Trees has evolved from the Dark Forest project, that occurred in the UK and Brazil.

This is an ongoing partnership project with artist Silvia Leal, at Estudio Movil Experimental; Horizon Research Institute, University of Nottingham; CCNAW; and Carlo Buontempo, Senior Climate Scientist at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter UK.

Active Ingredient have developed a reputation since 1996 for creating award winning interactive artworks merging art, technology and science. Active Ingredient create innovative artworks that bring together location, social networking, bio and environmental sensing, data collection and play.
