Bringing back the voices of the artists and selectors involved, the exhibition revealed how and why particular works came be to acquired.

The exhibition included highlights from recent years, with painting, sculpture and video by Gilbert and George, Mark Wallinger, Rebecca Warren, Tony Cragg, Peter Doig and Martin Creed, and spectacular installations by John Frankland and David Batchelor.

The Gathering is the result of the first curatorial competition for post-graduate students run by the Arts Council Collection in 2008. The competition, called Select.ac, offers the opportunity to curate an exhibition drawn from the Collection, and the first winner is Robert Dingle, from the MFA Curating course at Goldsmiths College in London.
