Formal Garden
Roman Standard (2013), a rare example of sculpture in the open air by Emin, features a delicate blackbird, perched atop a four-metre high pole. The humble bird, which disappears from view at certain angles, presents a purposeful contrast to the eagle-topped standards traditionally carried into battle by the Roman army to symbolise power.

More Information

Born in 1963, Emin became known for her frank, self-revealing art, a well-known example of which is My Bed (1998) – in which the artist’s actual bed is displayed with several weeks of detritus, including cigarette ends, stained sheets and worn underwear.
