James Turrell, Ganzfeld: Tight End, 2005. Photo: Jonty Wilde

Seeing ‘The Family of Man’ in such an amazing environment really touched my inner human spirit – 1990.  Visiting the Hepworth Retrospective a couple of years ago – 2003 was wonderful, thought provoking and moving.  Feb 2006 – my daughter surprised me with a 60th birthday party at YSP.  All my friends and family visited the amazing ‘Light Show’ of James Turrell.  Fantastic experience!!  I have visited the Andy Goldsworthy exhibition at least 6 times-2007 it never ceases to move me, and gives a real joy to be alive, in the presence of his truly amazing works.  I love this place so much.  Come for spiritual uplifts and sense of wonderment.

Andy Goldsworthy, Cowdung on Glass, 2007. Photo Jonty Wilde

Just to be able to see so much of Andy Goldsworthy’s work in one (incredibly beautiful) place made my heart sing and provided unforgettable memories. Not only for me but also for my son and daughter-in-law who brought me here! I will be back – with my younger daughter before Jan 08

Eduardo Chillida, Buscando la Luiz IV, 2001.

Best ever exhibition –Chillida.  Impressive array of work including his prints based upon the semi cubist/modernist themes which are also very reminiscent of Spain.  Most impressive forged  steel standing sculpture – a real feel for the tradition of craft orientated sculpture. More please.

Kan Yasuda, Takou (Message of Light) 1994.

Kan Yasuda’s white marble pieces 94/5 In a row on the pavilion one in the pond. Unbelievable.

Phillip King, Call, 1967.

A school holiday family trip with friends to se the Phillip King exhibition – the children were incredulous that they were ‘art’ especially as they could make them at home with ‘Meccano’!!  Both my children went on to study art, my son 3D art at A level and my daughter textiles.

Andy Goldsworthy, Wood Room, 2007

My memory came flooding back as I stepped into Andy Goldsworthy ’Wood Room’… the smell took me right back to when I lived ‘on the road’ in my truck; an organic way of living, snug, musty, warm.  A great memory, a great room a great exhibition… inspiring!

I am sending you a poem I wrote after my first visit in December 2005.  It’s a “thank you” to the Park for being such a special place.  Subsequently I have made the Park a regular meeting place for a friend whom I had not seen for over 30 years.  We love the Park and look forward to the next 30 years!

Sculpture Park
At Junction 38 steel wheels drum
On road stone in three rows
North and south with no end
In Bretton Park
Sculptures stand always
Poised without motion
Dancing to music
Without sound
On hillside
Figures face away
Look across water
Out into the distance
Beyond sight
Amongst the trees
Granite boulders shine
Smooth with fluid light
While red iron surges
To the sky
At the Centre
We tread a walk-way
Carved out with names
Of those who were here
Before us
In the car-park
We pause to ponder
The marks we make on
Metal, wood and rock
Or paper
At junction 30 steel wheels drum
On road stone in three rows
North and south with no end
