Andy Goldsworthy. Leaf Stalk Room. 2007 (detail)

Seeing my kids and their friends circa 1981, making sculptures from twigs. They were so good that they got a slot on Look North.

The pleasure gained from talking with the other attendants at the Underground Gallery Goldsworthy exhibition. Their first hand knowledge of the construction of the works and the pleasure they shared in discussion was an enormous suprize and made my visit so much more enjoyable than a mere visual experience could ever have been.

My memory is chatting to a couple probably in their 70s stood by the Moore, Vertical Moline. They were taking photos to compare to ones taken of their (now grown up) children in the same spot 40 years ago. The Deer Shelter overwhelmed me in its beauty and serenity. Almost spiritual.

I was made redundant from my 18 year career as a FE Lecturer from a college in Wakefield. On the last day 50 of my colleagues were leaving. Two of us and two ex-colleagues met at YSP for a picnic. We had strawberries and champagne and walked round the Sculpture Park giggling and crying. We ended up in the Bothy cafe for tea and cakes. I also remember when my oldest son was 6 (now 22) we came here on a very hot day. He had taken his tee-shirt off, he ate an ice cream and got stung by a wasp on his face. We rushed to the Bothy cafe for some bicarb to put on it. Once he'd recovered, he rushed out and rolled down the hill in the walled garden- right over a patch of stinging nettles. His back was covered in stings! We told him: 'some days are just like that!' Ever since I've carried some anti-histamine cream in my bag.

When we moved back up North from London, we rented a house near Leeds that didn't have a garden. YSP became our garden for 6 months until we found a new house. We still come as often as possible.

Interior of James Turrell, Deer Shelter, 2006

I visited YSP very early one frosty morning to take part in the dawning of a new day, experienced from inside the Turrell Deer Shelter. My daughter Kat, and I immersed ourselves in the patient anticipation and contemplation as the night sky diluted to a deep blue. We then emerged cold on the inside but with a warm inner glow at the magnificent sight of the early morning mist floating over the park. An ethereal, magic moment.

About 10 years ago we bought a group of children from Darfield Valley Primary School Barnsley (the Art Club). They followed up with a fabulous project that I believe influenced the creativity of our school for many years.
