Jewellery by Anne Gericke.

A warm day in late spring, and I brought a girl here on our 4th date. After strolling around the sculptures we found a spot under a tree, its low branches giving shelter, shade and a safe feeling. Filling ourselves with food from a quickly knocked together picnic, we felt sleepy and content. We could lay back, relax in the calmness and forget about the rest of the world, drinking in each others company. I'm not saying YSP made us fall madly in love, but it helped.

Last time I was here, some five years ago, we brought my father who had alzheimer's, yet he was delighted when we got him one of the disabled person's vehicles. He had a wonderful time as we walked around, and raised his hat to a woman in a vehicle as they passed each other. Of course he remembered none of it, but I do.

I remember coming to YSP as a child. It was probably my first experience of art. I loved being allowed to run around, touch the sculptures and hunt for signatures on the Henry Moore bronzes.
It is still one of my favourite places in Yorkshire if not the world!!

Elisabeth Frink, Water Buffalo Standing, Water Buffalo Lying, 1988. Bronze. Photo: Jerry Hardman-Jones

Once, several years ago when Elisabeth Frink’s Water Buffalo had only recently arrived, I passed a woman standing beside them, with a little girl sitting on the ground stroking the nose of the lying buffalo.  I smiled in greeting.  The woman smiled back and said 'I can’t get her away.  We’ve been here ages.  She can’t bear to leave it.'  Elisabeth Frink spoke and speaks to all ages.  Her presence in the Park is a lasting and ongoing pleasure.

Trees at YSP by Malcolm Morris

I enjoy all the sculptures in their beautiful surroundings but, I also admire the trees. I think it's worth coming just to look at them and my lasting memory includes an image of the Cedar of Lebanon.
