An annual Programme, open to local schools, the YSP Ignite Programme enables children of all ages and abilities to work directly with artists both inside and outside of the schoolroom. It provides the opportunity for teaching staff to learn new creative skills which can be embedded into their teaching practice.

More Information

The YSP Ignite - Artist in Schools Programme is unique in several respects:
  • The AIS Programme holder works with children of all ages from infants up to GCSE & 'A' level students and with children with learning and emotional disabilities
  • Teachers work alongside the artist and develop their own knowledge and skills in the area
  • The school can choose to use the unique surroundings and educational resources of YSP for the residency
  • The culmination of each Programme will be the creation of a teaching resource which reflects the artist’s journey, their practice and the contributions of the teaching staff they have worked with. This will benefit the teachers by providing a tool for reflection of the Programme and their work with the artist. It will contain points for discussion, new activities and workshop outlines enabling teachers to embed creative learning in their teaching practice and support it’s dissemination across the school
  • Typically the artist works in schools for residencies of between one and five days
  • A different art form is chosen each year after close consultation with schools
  • To date the artists have represented the following areas: film, sculpture, poetry, drama, dance, music, creative writing, painting, textile art, physical theatre, art as environment, creative writing with illustration and ‘sculpture outside the classroom’
  • An overarching theme allows for both introductory and networking events to take place at the beginning and completion of the residencies, which provides space for reflection and discussion

Feedback from teaching staff and pupils

I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it has given me a lot of motivation to pursue my dreams

Students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have been shown loads of new skills. The post-16 students have a new lease of life and I can expect sketchbooks and ideas to go from strength to strength.’

I watched a range of 6th form and year 7 and year 9 students, become actively involved in raising their expectations re. their own art and that of others.’

Brilliant two days! Making you think about art differently and giving a hands on touch / texture approach.’
