Living Heritage

As part of the heritage research project, ten oral accounts have been recorded which share unique knowledge of the development of YSP and the history of the Bretton Estate. Personal memories of living and working on the estate from the 1960s to the present day are narrated with photographs. These films presents three minute highlights of the full interviews including those with YSP’s Head Gardener, Dave Edwards; Manager of Sculpture and Estates, Alan Mackenzie; and Founding and Executive Director, Peter Murray CBE. The full recordings are available to researchers at the
main YSP archive.

You can also find out more about the estate by joining an Art & Landscape Tour delivered by trained volunteers. These tours are offered free of charge and available on Saturdays and Sundays. Please ask at the YSP Centre Information Desk to find out details about the next tour.

Future Heritage
As part of YSP’s continuing commitment to protect, conserve and reintegrate the Bretton Estate, we are working with Wakefield Council and Rushbond plc, the developer of Bretton Hall. We have conducted an extensive survey of the landscape which will form the basis for our future estate management plan to restore historic features and open up hitherto un-seen areas for the enjoyment of the visiting public.
