21 September is the UN International Day of Peace, a day of global ceasefire and non-violence: Peace Day. YSP invited Manchester Aid to Kosova (MaK), the Directors of the Peace Park in Podujevë, Kosova and its many partners to celebrate Peace Day in 2009. Together they introduced their work and vision for the Peace Park and the regeneration of Podujevë, aiming to raise awareness and create opportunities for future development.

The event was the culmination of a residency at YSP for Agron and Fazli Blakçori (Kosovar Directors of the Peace Park). Who have since returned to Kosova where they are sharing all they have learnt and are developing an arts strategy for the Peace Park.

The day of celebrations included:

Jane Knight (Eden Project landscape architect and designer of the Peace Park, Podujevë) and Peter Sandover (Director of Sandover Associates, specialists in sustainable architecture, planning and urban design) spoke about regeneration and renewal addressing the question “Why create a Peace Park in post-war Kosova?”

Castle Fine Arts Foundry and sculptor Agron Blakçori gave a demonstration on the preparation of the first sculpture to be cast for the Manchester Peace Park in Kosova.

A peace banner was created and displayed in a creative writing and painting workshop inspired by war poetry, led by artists Stephen Raw and Matt Raw.

The Travelling Band who are currently leading MaK’s music outreach programme, gave a musical performance which featured their own composition ‘Peace One Day’.

‘Art and Kosova', a talk on the artistic practice in Kosova today, was led by Kosovar artists Agron and Fazli Blakçori and followed by James Walmsley, Director of Artland Gallery and curator of the exhibition ‘Fragile State – Art from Kosova’.
