Book a Self Directed Visit online

Before you Visit

The pupils' experience will be enhanced if they are familiar with the concept of sculpture before the visit. Ask questions and do activities that will lead to discussion based on their current understanding. You may want to introduce them to the works they will see on their visit by studying the information pages under the Artists section. Some suggestions are provided in our introduction to Looking at Sculpture download on this page.

Practical considerations
  • Consider how follow-up work can support existing classroom lessons. Our suggestions are based on the National Curriculum Art and Design. Our activity suggestions are based on the Key processes ‘Explore and Create’ and 'Understand and Evaluate' at Key Stage 3. The suggestions are deliberately simple to enable teachers to modify levels of sophistication easily. For primary pupils a visit to YSP is well positioned to stimulate a cross-curricular approach. With secondary groups follow-up may involve a practical module or a personal study.
  • Think about what materials you would like pupils to use. It is often helpful if each pupil has their own bag containing everything they will need.
  • We would like you to enjoy your visit to YSP, and therefore we recommend all members of the party wear clothing and footwear suitable to the outdoors and weather.
  • Displays in the Park can sometimes change at short notice. We always recommend that you visit beforehand or plan a few alternative sculptures, just in case.
  • There is always a range of temporary exhibitions on at the Park. Check the website or at the YSP Centre to ensure that you have up to date information for your visit.
  • It is essential that all self-directed groups book before visiting. To do this please contact the learning team using the contact details to the left or book online. Download for more information > How to book a visit
  • Please be aware that places are limited and can book up quickly especially during the summer months.
  • Please ensure that all groups are accompanied by adults. The recommended ratio is 1:6 for Key Stages 1 & 2 and 1:10 for Key Stage 3 and above. This is due to the extensive scale of YSP.
  • Please make sure that you make pupils aware of YSP Code. Download a copy here > YSP Code
