Bill Viola has released a rare limited edition lithographic print of a drawing from 2006, featuring text from the 16th century Sufi romance, Madhumalati
. This is the first ever lithograph that Viola has produced featuring a drawing.
Written by the Indian Sufi mystic Mir Sayyid Manjhan Shattari Rajgiri, Madhumalati
tells the love story of prince Manohar and princess Madhumalati who must suffer separation and self-transformation before coming together in true happiness. The Hindavi Suvi romances suggest awakening love between a transcendent god-head and the human world in a journey of self-transformation and the balancing of the physical and metaphysical world.
