Breon O'Casey 1928 - 2011.
By Sarah Coulson and Sophie Bowness
Breon O'Casey's artistic repertoire stretches from painting, through sculpting, printmaking and weaving, to jewellery-making. The variety within his body of work can be exemplified no more keenly than in the contrast between his abstract paintings and his sculptures, which typically follow the forms of figures, animals and birds. Nonetheless, it is unified by its expression of a reverent fascination with tradition, reflected in the influence of primitive art that it exudes, its muscular but warm use of colour and its disarming honesty. Published to coincide with O'Casey's exhibition at YSP in 2005, this volume combines a section on each plain of his artistic range with an autobiographical account. Its numerous colour and black and white photographs are accompanied by O'Casey's own lucid notes.
Sadly Breon passed away on Sunday 22 May. He was a very special person and artist, who will be greatly missed by his family, friends and followers of his work, created over a long and productive life.
