Published alongside Anthony Caro's 2001-2 exhibition ‘Sculpture and Sculpitecture’, at YSP’s then-new Longside Gallery, this book includes large, lavish colour photographs of the two classes of work from which the exhibition derived its name. 'Sculpitecture' is a term that the artist himself coined to describe pieces of work produced throughout his career that bear some similarities to architecture and peruse the relationship between interior and exterior. ‘Caro at Longside: Sculpture and Sculpitecture’ includes an interview between Caro and YSP Executive Director Peter Murray that examines the background to much of his work and an excerpt from a lecture delivered by the artist at the Tate Gallery in 1991.
‘Sculpture and Sculpitecture’ at Longside was the largest exhibition of Caro’s work to be staged in the UK for fifteen years. The major exhibition launched the opening of Longside on 21 September 2001 and included a group of the artist’s largest sculptures, many of which had never been previously exhibited.
