Winter/Hörbelt: Cratehouse for Castleford - until September 2008
German artists Wolfgang Winter and Berthold Hörbelt have worked together since 1992, creating art landmarks for public spaces all over the world. The artists work to reclaim lost public spaces and open people's eyes to the fact that art is an important vehicle to increase the quality of life, not only to make the city more splendid. Winter/Hörbelt's beautiful, light filled crate-houses use recycled, everyday objects to build functional spaces for shelter, meeting and entertainment.
"During our visits we saw the metal shipping containers that people of Castleford use as meeting points, something like small clubhouses; one of our first ideas was to change a little this kind of architecture, to create maybe a functional pavilion with sculptural and architectural qualities as a semi-public space where people can stay together in a pleasant way and have fun together. In Germany we call those places Vereinsheim (clubhouse)."
Emma Goodway of the Castleford Heritage Trust will be promoting the use of the Cratehouse by local schools, groups and organisations to capitalise on its limited time in the town.
Please get in touch with Emma on 01977 556741 or drop in to 2 Sagar Street, across the road from Cratehouse, for more information and see how you could be involved.
The opening times are Monday, Thursday, Friday 10.00 - 16.00 and by pre-booking.
There will be a week of special activities to celebrate the Cratehouse for Castleford before it moves to another site at Kielder Sculpture Trail, Northumbria.
No more than 10 people at a time. Admission is free.
