Sophie Ryder
24 May - 2 November 2008
Sophie Ryder's association with YSP began in 1986 during her residency, immediately after graduating from the RA Schools. This exhibition centres on powerful sculptural works made over the last decade. They are an exploration of the female psyche and sexuality and frequently reference the artist' s own body as it morphs with the powerful energy and form of the hare.
The strength and visual impact of Ryder's stunning wire wall drawings, dislocated images of animal and human eyes, hands and feet, alongside vast free-standing wire sculptures will command the challenging space of the Longside Gallery. In the open-air, a series of bronzes explore Ryder's iconic themes of the anthropomorphic hare, horse, dog and minotaur, reflecting her abiding interest in the physicality and mythology of these creatures.
