'***** One of the don't miss exhibitions of the year' The Sunday Telegraph

29 May 2010 - 27 February 2011

Yorkshire Sculpture Park presents a rich and extensive exhibition of work by David Nash, tracing the evolution of the artist's forty-year career and offering a vivid statement of his life's work. Sculpture, installation and drawings range across the Park and include new monumental works for the Underground Gallery, a retrospective survey in Longside Gallery and contextual displays from the artist's archive alongside sculpture in the open air and a permanent outdoor commission. This is envisaged to be the largest exhibition by the internationally acclaimed artist who has developed an eloquent understanding of trees, working with their traits to create sculpture, installation, projects and related drawings.

The Underground Gallery features imposing new works, including huge redwood crags and large black eucalyptus spheres. The expansive Longside Gallery presents a survey of retrospective work from the artist's and international collections. The Bothy Gallery illustrates one of the artist's most celebrated projects, Wooden Boulder, a large piece of 200 year-old oak released into a stream in the Welsh mountains in 1978, whose journey is documented through drawing, film and photography. The Garden Gallery shows works from the artist's archive, which explore the development of his practice.

The exhibition will be documented through a specially commissioned artist film by Pete Telfer, edited alongside archive footage, presenting a fascinating insight into the artist and his practice.

David Nash has very generously created a number of limited editions, exclusively for this exhibition, with all proceeds going to YSP. They include pastel stencil drawings and bronze casts, available to purchase from the Garden Gallery shop. Unframed prints are also available to buy online.

Wheelies

David Nash first made a wheelie in 1974 for his son William, for which he won a prize at the National Eisteddfod in Wales. In 1976 Nash produced a series of wheelies to be sold as a ‘multiple souvenir’ from his solo show Loosely Held Grain at the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. He later made multiples of ‘ladders’ and ‘running tables’.

For this major show, Nash has repeated the idea of wheelie multiples to be sold during the exhibition and for visitors to take home. Produced in four series, each wheelie is unique and offers a rare opportunity to acquire an original ‘Nash’ sculpture. View the full range of Wheelies available. Call the YSP Shop on 01924 832631 for more information or to purchase a wheelie.

A range of exhibition merchandise including a bag, mug and sketchbook is available in the YSP Shop and online. And you can pick up an illustrated £5 guide from any of the galleries or the main shop.

A £20 book with texts by Annie Proulx, Ben Tufnell, Sabine Schlenker and Peter Murray is available to pre-order and will be available to purchase in the shop or online from mid-July.

Exhibition generously supported by Roger Evans. Also supported by the Henry Moore Foundation and Arts Council England, Yorkshire.
