Phillip King was part of the New Generation of sculptors who, through a series of exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery in the 1960s, rejected the idea that sculpture is a means of representing something else. Instead, they explored sculpture-making for its own sake, including the properties of different materials, methods of construction and the final objects that could be created.

More Information

Shogun is a bronze cast of a constructed work made by King in 1981. The artist began experimenting with juxtapositions of materials while working as an assistant to Henry Moore in the late 1950s. Shogun uses wood, steel and the chain from a fork lift truck in a composition that suggests force, referencing the literal meaning of the title. The bronze cast retains the physical energy of the original work, with the details of the grain of the wood and the steel chain still visible.

Due to conservation requirements Shogun by Phillip King will go on display in the open air in 2012.
